A rising tide of business regulations and new employment laws threatens to engulf small firms and sole traders. Apart from the hassle of keeping up with all the new laws - and the inevitable paperwork - there's the ever-attendant risk of ending up in court or in front of the Employment Tribunal. Which is where for many small businesses the trouble really starts. Because mounting a defence in court can cost thousands - with no guarantee of getting your money back even if you win. It's fine for huge corporations - they usually have specialist departments and the financial resources to deal with these problems - but for smaller companies, a court case or even an Inland Revenue investigation can spell financial disaster. However, for a change there's now some good news for the smaller business. Small firm specialist insurance broker Tolson Messenger has launched a new policy that's a real safety net for small traders. For around only £100 a year, "Lawsuit" not only covers the cost of defending court cases but offers all the legal advice you could need, on tap, from qualified professional experts. "We specialise in small firms, so we know what their problems are," says Ian Jones, Tolson Messenger director. "And with "Lawsuit" we know we've come up with an affordable solution to a very real problem." Jones emphasises that "Lawsuit" is as much about keeping out of trouble in the first place as it is about paying for legal costs. "As well as our Legal Consultants helpline, giving access to instant expert advice, we're including an up-to-the-minute employment manual on CD-Rom, free of charge, designed to help small employers keep up and comply with all the regulations," he says. This latest offering from Tolson Messenger certainly provides an impressive range of covers - everything from Employer's Protection, including payment of any awards made against you - through to cash compensation if you have to go on jury service. Most impressive of all is that for a petty-cash cost - the most you'll pay is just over £150 including tax for the all-singing, all-dancing policy - you get a level of protection that would be the envy of many big firms.
